Overview
Greenview was engaged to provide multi-discipline engineering for the fitout of a new childcare and youth centre at Kangaroo Street, Manly. The project involved two distinct fitout components within the same building: a childcare playroom incorporating craft, kitchen and laundry facilities; and a community centre fitout including a hall, commercial kitchen, meeting room, offices and amenities.
Working alongside Nimbus Architecture, Greenview provided a full engineering scope across seven disciplines, making this one of the broader childcare engineer NSW engagements in the firm's portfolio.
The challenge
Childcare facilities have specific regulatory requirements that go beyond standard commercial fitout standards, including requirements for ventilation, lighting levels, acoustic management, thermal comfort and hygiene facilities for the age groups being served. The commercial kitchen component within the community centre added further complexity, with specific ventilation, gas and hydraulic requirements applying to that space. Traffic engineering was also required to address access and movement around the site. Managing all of these requirements within a single coordinated scope, across two functionally distinct fitout areas, required careful engineering coordination throughout.
Greenview's approach
Greenview's seven-discipline scope was developed in coordination with Nimbus Architecture, using the firm's REVIT-based approach to resolve the building services across both the childcare and community centre fitout areas. Section J energy compliance was addressed through the mechanical and electrical design to ensure the completed facilities met Part J of the National Construction Code (NCC) energy efficiency requirements. The traffic engineering scope addressed access and parking considerations for the site.
Services delivered
- Structural
Structural engineering for the fitout works.
- Civil
Civil engineering and stormwater design for the site.
- Traffic
Traffic engineering for site access and parking management.
- Mechanical
HVAC design for the childcare playroom and community centre spaces, meeting the specific ventilation requirements of childcare and community hall environments, including commercial kitchen exhaust.
- Electrical
Lighting and power design for both fitout components.
- Hydraulics
Hydraulic services for the childcare kitchen and laundry, and the community centre commercial kitchen and amenities.
- ESD / Section J
Energy efficiency compliance report in accordance with Part J of the National Construction Code (NCC).
Outcome
The completed facility provides the Manly community with a purpose-built childcare and youth centre that meets both regulatory requirements and the operational needs of the facilities.
Greenview's coordinated engineering scope, delivered across seven disciplines, ensured the project team had a complete engineering package that addressed every aspect of the two fitout components.
