Overview
Greenview was engaged to deliver multi-discipline engineering for the comprehensive redevelopment of the Kangaroo Valley Bush Retreat following its destruction in the 2020 bushfires. The project involved the design and documentation of an entirely new tourist hospitality complex in the Kangaroo Valley, working alongside Ryter Management, architect Edmiston Jones and builder Peloton Constructions.
The redevelopment comprised eight tourist cabins, a managers cabin, a function centre with capacity for events, an alfresco dining area with a commercial kitchen, an amenities building and associated site infrastructure. Greenview's scope covered every engineering discipline across all of these building types.
The challenge
Redeveloping a multi-building tourist facility after bushfire destruction is a complex engineering undertaking. The project involves multiple NCC building classes on a single site, each with different building services requirements. Building in the Kangaroo Valley's bush setting introduces additional considerations — stormwater management for a rural site, bushfire attack level compliance for the new structures, and the practical challenges of construction in a regional location. Building Sustainability Index (BASIX) certification was required to demonstrate the development met NSW sustainability requirements.
Greenview's approach
Greenview's full-discipline scope was developed within the team's coordinated REVIT model, enabling Edmiston Jones and Peloton Constructions to work from a single, resolved engineering package across all building types. BASIX compliance was integrated with the mechanical and electrical design across the applicable building types.
Services delivered
- Structural
Structural engineering for all buildings across the redevelopment.
- Civil
Stormwater and drainage design for the rural site.
- Mechanical
HVAC design for the tourist cabins, function centre and commercial kitchen spaces.
- Electrical
Electrical services design for all buildings, including external lighting and site infrastructure.
- Hydraulics
Hydraulic services for all structures, including commercial kitchen and amenities requirements.
- Fire
Wet fire (sprinkler) and dry fire (hydrant) system design for the applicable structures.
- ESD / Section J
Building Sustainability Index (BASIX) certification for the development.
Outcome
The completed redevelopment returns the Kangaroo Valley Bush Retreat to operation as a contemporary tourist hospitality destination, with facilities substantially improved from those lost in the 2020 bushfires.
Greenview's full-discipline engineering scope provided Ryter Management and their project team with a coordinated engineering solution across every element of the development, from individual tourist cabins to the commercial kitchen and function centre.
