Overview
Greenview was engaged to deliver multi-discipline engineering services for the upgrade of an existing two-storey building into a new purpose-built learning centre at Knox Grammar School, Wahroonga. The project involved the transformation of an existing structure on the Knox Grammar campus, with Greenview working alongside builder Rohrig NSW across structural, electrical, mechanical and hydraulic disciplines.
As an education building engineer with experience across Sydney's independent schools sector, Greenview brought a practical understanding of the constraints involved in working within occupied, heritage-adjacent school environments.
The challenge
Upgrading an existing building to modern learning centre standards involves resolving the gap between what was originally designed and what is required today. Structural modifications to accommodate new layouts, upgraded mechanical services for improved thermal comfort and air quality, and new electrical infrastructure all need to be integrated within the envelope of the original building. Energy compliance documentation under Section J of the National Construction Code (NCC) is also required for works of this scope.
Greenview's approach
Greenview's team worked across all five disciplines within the coordinated REVIT model, enabling the engineering scope to be developed as a single, integrated package rather than five separate consultant deliverables. This Building Information Modelling (BIM) approach is particularly valuable in school refurbishment projects, where the interaction between new services and existing structure needs to be carefully managed. Coordination with Rohrig NSW ensured the construction documentation reflected the realities of the existing building.
Services delivered
- Structural
Structural engineering for building modifications to support the new learning centre layout.
- Mechanical
HVAC design providing comfortable thermal conditions across all learning spaces.
- Electrical
