Overview

Greenview was engaged as a university engineering consultant for the redevelopment of Building Z at Western Sydney University (WSU), Kingswood campus. The project involved the partial demolition and refurbishment of an existing structure, combined with the construction of a new two-storey building and portal frame addition.

The refurbished sections of the building now house dedicated laboratories for Materials Testing, Nanotechnology, Soils and Asphalt Testing — specialist spaces that required careful coordination of services across both new and retained structure. Greenview worked alongside BKA Architecture on this significant education building project in NSW.

The challenge

A project of this type involves two distinct construction conditions: working within retained structure and designing for new build. Services in the refurbished areas must integrate with existing infrastructure and accommodate the constraints of the original building fabric, while services in the new structure can be designed more freely. Coordinating these conditions across seven disciplines — while meeting the specific environmental requirements of specialist research laboratories — required a disciplined approach to documentation and coordination.

Greenview's approach

All engineering disciplines were developed within Greenview's coordinated REVIT model, enabling the team to manage the interface between the existing and new structure throughout the design process. This Building Information Modelling (BIM) approach meant that clashes were identified and resolved before construction, giving BKA Architecture and the building contractor confidence in the documentation. The Section J report was developed in parallel with the building services design to ensure energy compliance was integrated from the outset rather than treated as a separate sign-off.

Services delivered

Structural

Structural engineering for the partial demolition, refurbishment works and new two-storey structure and portal frame.

Civil

Civil engineering and stormwater design for the site.

Mechanical

HVAC design for the refurbished and new laboratory spaces, including specialist ventilation for research environments.

Electrical

Lighting, power and services design across the existing and new building areas.

Hydraulics

Hydraulic services design for the building.

Fire

Fire protection engineering compliant with the National Construction Code.

ESD / Section J

Energy efficiency compliance report in accordance with Part J of the National Construction Code (NCC).

Outcome

The completed project delivers Western Sydney University a modernised and expanded research facility on its Kingswood campus, with dedicated laboratory spaces for four distinct technical disciplines.

Greenview's coordinated multi-discipline approach ensured the complex interface between the existing structure and new works was managed efficiently, delivering a building that meets both the university's operational requirements and current NCC energy standards.
