Overview

Greenview provided healthcare engineering services for the installation of a new MRI machine at Prince of Wales Hospital, one of Sydney's major public teaching hospitals, located in Randwick. The project was delivered in partnership with Nordon Jago and involved the engineering of building services to support the installation and operation of high-field MRI imaging equipment within the hospital's existing facilities.

MRI machine installations represent some of the more technically demanding fitout projects in the healthcare engineering space, combining stringent electromagnetic shielding requirements with complex mechanical cooling and power systems.

The challenge

MRI machines generate powerful magnetic fields and significant amounts of heat in operation. The building services engineering that supports an MRI installation must account for a number of highly specific requirements: dedicated high-capacity electrical supply with appropriate shielding and filtering; specialist mechanical cooling for the magnet and equipment room; controlled humidity conditions; hydraulic services for cooling water systems; and fire sprinkler design that does not introduce ferromagnetic materials into the magnetic field zone. All of this must be delivered within an operational hospital environment where patient care and safety cannot be disrupted.

Greenview's approach

Greenview's scope was coordinated closely with Nordon Jago and the hospital's facilities team to ensure each system met the specific technical requirements of MRI equipment operation. Working in a live hospital environment requires a clear understanding of infection control protocols, access restrictions and the need to minimise disruption to adjacent clinical areas. All engineering documentation was developed to the standard required for a Class 9a healthcare building.

Services delivered

Electrical

Dedicated electrical supply design for the MRI equipment, including appropriate shielding and power quality provisions.

Mechanical

HVAC and cooling design for the MRI equipment room, meeting the environmental requirements of the imaging equipment.

Hydraulics

Hydraulic services for cooling water systems associated with the MRI installation.

Fire

Sprinkler system design compatible with the magnetic field environment of an MRI suite.

Outcome

The completed installation at Prince of Wales Hospital provides the facility with a new MRI imaging capability, delivered with building services engineering that meets the stringent technical requirements of medical imaging infrastructure.

Greenview's experience as a healthcare engineer in Sydney meant the team understood the specific challenges of this project type and could deliver a coordinated scope that met both the equipment manufacturer's requirements and the hospital's operational standards.
